Background

Pacific National is Australia’s largest private rail freight operator. The company was previously jointly owned by Patrick Holdings and Toll and has since been taken over by Toll Holdings.

Pacific National had a legacy of PeopleSoft Payroll V7 which had been significantly modified to deal with the requirements of the business. In addition, an award interpreter module had been developed. Pacific National were upgrading from Version 7.0 to Version 8.9 HCM and Global Payroll, integrated to WorkBrain award interpreter.

Business Challenge

The organisation had become dependent on a small support organisation and needed to utilise more up-to-date functionality in the Payroll and HR areas. Additionally, a number of business units were on different systems and needed to be moved to a single Payroll and HR function in order to realise organisational benefits and cost savings.

Project Management Results

CMC project managed the upgrade to a new version of PeopleSoft Payroll and HRMS V8.9. An award interpretation system from WorkBrain was also implemented to remove the heavy customisations in the previous system and provide the functionality required by the business.

The system went live in July 2006. CMC were retained to manage subsequent phases, which was to migrate other business units to the same application and infrastructure platform.

Our project was perceived to be quite challenging, however, CMC’s consultant was very capable with the relevant industry and technical skills that made a real difference to Pacific National
