Background

CS Energy, a Queensland government-owned energy provider, sought independent consulting to assess and streamline their SAP business processes and systems. This project aimed to improve work safety, productivity, and performance as part of 10 reform objectives.

Business Challenge

The review focused on two key areas:

  1. Right Systems – Robust Data (RSRD) Review
  2. Strategic Procurement Review

CS Energy expected this project to identify improvement opportunities, enable cost reductions, ensure adoption of a Common Operating Model, optimise SAP systems, and identify business risks related to processes and systems.

Anticipated benefits to the business included:

  • Identification of opportunities for improvement.
  • Identification of initiatives that could enable significant cost reductions and process efficiencies.
  • Engagement with key business users to ensure adoption of a Common Operating Model across all sites of the business
  • Optimisation of the SAP systems currently implemented in the business.
  • Identification of risks to the business related to business process and systems deployment.

Results

CS Energy engaged Combined Management Consultants (CMC) to conduct the SAP Review. CMC was selected for their independence and expertise in ERP Strategy.

CMC interviewed a diverse cross-section of employees across various departments including:

  • Strategic Procurement
  • Plant Maintenance and Permit to Work
  • Finance and Business Planning and Consolidation
  • HR and Payroll
  • Health and Safety and Incident Management
  • Risk and Audit
  • Project Systems
  • Hedge Accounting
  • Learning and Development
  • Engineering
  • Energy Trading
  • Inventory

The review resulted in a Recommendations Report and Action Plan, outlining short, mid, and long-term initiatives. CMC then scoped improvement projects, which CS Energy approved for Design and Implementation.
